Now, I remember this one. I was in my science class with Ms. Hicks. I don't remember most of my teacher's names from middle school, but I remember her because of how she wept when this incident occurred. We had the television on in the classroom to watch it launch and then the tragedy occurred. I didn't really understand just how major it was, but I knew it affected her deeply so it had to be HUGE. I still see her blond hair and red face trying to hide her emotions as she ran from the class.

Your account of this event helps me to remember how people have sacrificed themselves so that we (humankind) can learn.

so many kids watching that day.... that was so NOT the history they were supposed to see in the making

The Challenger incident was one of those quintessential "where were you when you hear about it" moments, like JFK's assassination or the Twin Trade Towers on 9/11. We were all glued to the TV (or radio in my case) following the events and listening to the follow-up. And of course all of us saw the wave of Christa McAuliffe tributes, and especially the tragedy of her students, who were there to watch the lift-off. None of it is easy watching, I guess.

My question would be - Did we learn? Are the right people reading Feynman's appendix, and is anybody taking it to heart? Besides you, that is.
